New Religious Movements Guide

Want to find out just what the Holy Order of MANS or the Gurdjieff Work (to name only two examples) is all about? Here is the Web site for you: it features unbiased profiles of more than two hundred New Religious Movements (known as NRMs for short) created by students at the University of Virginia. It’s a great site to do research on spiritual groups or teachers you might read or hear about. Every profile gives you a summary of beliefs and discusses controversial issues (when appropriate), plus links to important web sites about each group and bibliographies. This is a lot of helpful information gathered in one place!

You can look up a group alphabetically or search with names or keyword. This site makes every effort to report impartially, and provides a fascinating opportunity to get concise information on new groups and teachings. In addition there’s an index with links to hundreds of religious groups that are not profiled on this site. Easy to use and very well organized. (No pictures, though. Oh well, I guess you can’t have everything!)

Online Divination

Here’s a web site devoted to just one thing, but it's provided in a number of different ways. It offers free divinatory readings online using Tarot cards, the I Ching, runes, biorhythms, and more! To use the site, you simply type in a question you would like guidance on and choose the particular method you’d like to use. The readings are short and pithy, and come up quickly. The Tarot reading offers the most choices, with four different card layouts and six different decks to choose from. There are four kinds of runes and three layouts, and with the I Ching you can use either the coin or yarrow-stick methods.

Recent additions to their divination methods include bibliomancy and stichomancy. Bibliomancy is the practice of opening up a holy book, such as the Bible, and reading a random passage for inspiration or a sense of where to go next. When I tried their stichomancy program, which is similar but uses any kind of book (not just holy ones), the book the program chose for me was Dracula by Bram Stoker (gulp!). An easy-to-use site, well worth visiting when you’re in need of spiritual guidance.

Ashlynn’s Grove Pagan Information Resource

This is a simple, easy-to-navigate site with A LOT of listings! Categories include children, divination, how-tos, herbs (including a database of over 300 herbs!), downloadable graphics, and much more. Best of all, wise and sensible comments about spiritual paths are interspersed throughout, such as "Beware of ANY ‘Spiritual Path’ that discourages thinking for yourself."

Divination choices range from Tarot and runes to less well known techniques such as dactylomancy, the art of using a finger ring suspended on a thread as a sort of pendulum for asking questions (most often used when divining the sex of an unborn baby!). And for entertainment, you can consult an online Magic 8 Ball or the "Crone Sez" page (definitely recommended!). Free or shareware downloads on this site include a voodoo doll for Windows and the theme from Bewitched on audio file. But I don’t want to give away all the treats hidden there; you’ll have to take a look yourself!
